Mess Mitigation

A key insight we were going after a few years ago was the idea of mess mitigation.  After talking with many mom's, we realized that the cleaning up messes was the main pain point that most of them experienced during feeding time.  As a result, we sought out solutions on how to make things easier to clean, or even how to prevent messes from happening to begin with.  Since my area of expertise is with toy design, I decided to approach the problem from a sensory point view.  After much research, I discovered that busy hands led to less mess.  However, I didn't want to necessarily associate play time with eating time, so I kept the sensory development purely about tactile stimulation and less about play.

“Sensory experiences are like food for the brain…”

The main reason I went in this direction with these designs is because I found a bit of scientifically proven research that confirmed that sensory play is great for calming an anxious or frustrated child.  This is probably why the whole fidget spinner craze took off recently.  Nevertheless, I wanted to create spots with interesting tactile textures that would encourage baby to touch and distract them instead of slinging spaghetti across the room.
